Ham Morse allows you to practice morse code on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. It is designed particularly for Ham radio operators and others who wish to achieve or maintain a high level of proficiency in this classic mode of communication.

Ham morse has the following features:

The code is sent using the Farnsworth timing whereby the morse characters are sent at 15 words per minute (WPM) and then extra spacing is added to slow the overall WPM to speeds slower than 15 WPM. The farnsworth speed can be adjusted if you wish to use a speed other than 15WPM. The maximum speed that the morse can be sent at is 50 words per minute. The morse audio waveforms have a 5ms rise time to reduce key clicks and yet provide crisp code to copy.

The audio frequency can be varied from 220Hz up to 900Hz. A typical value might be around 700Hz but a lower tone can be very useful in some situations.

The code can be paused just in case you are interrupted or want to take a break, an incoming call on an iPhone pauses the code automatically.

To help you learn the morse code itself HamMorse allows you to practice a variety of sets of characters from individual random letters all the way to the current news stories from around the world.

Koch - This setting uses the Koch character progression. It starts with just one letter and then you can add a new letter when you have mastered the previous character set. This is one of the most popular methods of learning the morse character set.

Letters - Practice the individual letters, A-Z. Add new letters to your practice set using the settings page.

Numbers - Practice the numbers, 0-9. Which numbers you practice can be controlled on the settings page.

Callsigns - allows you to practice receiving random amateur radio callsigns, a mixture of letters and numbers (eg AA9PW, G1SNT, G5RV) that often prove troublesome when copying code on the air. HamMorse creates a wide variety of international callsigns using the standard ITU prefixes to provide useful practice where ever in the world you may be.

Punctuation - provides a wide variety of punctuation and standard morse code prosigns.

Top 100 and 500 most common words - this is a great way to start to recognize whole words the key to really improving your speed.

News feeds - these provide the opportunity to copy real sentences and keep up with the news at the same time. Note that the News feeds will only work with an active network connection.

Ham QSOs - listen to examples of typical on-air exchanges between ham radio operators - practice coping the callsigns, RST reports, location, rig, antenna and many other pieces of a typical QSO.

Accessibility support - The app also has support for Apples accessibility tool, Voice Over. When Voice Over is activated each button and field has an audible description available describing the button or slider and its use.

Text Delay - As an additional learning aid You can have the text appear a few seconds after the morse code is played so you have time to copy the letter before it appears on screen.

Text Filter - Filter out characters from the News feeds or QSOs that you are not yet familiar with so you can start practicing with real text even if you dont yet know the whole morse character set.

Pros and cons of Ham Morse app for iPhone and iPad

Ham Morse app good for

Very good application which has been improved in this last release.
..-. -... This is a great app. I have been trying to learn CW for a while and just got on the air and made my first CW QSO Now I need to get to the next level by copy without paper And start to read words rather than letters I can listen to words, sample QSOs, and news feeds in the car walking etc. but unlike tapes or mp3s I can see the text to verify correct read. This version has Koch method. Farnsworth timing, All the features that the program I use on my pc has plus news feeds. The only other cool option would be to send from other content like emails or lyrics. But thats just pushing it. The tone is fine now in this version and added Farnsworth timing rocks. Good work thanks for the great work. --... ...-- VE3DVY.
Well done A real ham did this and well worth the money I deleted every other quasi morse program as a result Thanks so much the callsign mode is awesome Ve3ips
All the other apps are crap but this one actually helps now I know most of the morse code!!!
The app is well thought out, except for one thing: I cant change the orientation on my iPad. If that one thing was fixed, Id give it a 5-star rating!
This has been my go to morse practice tool now that I am 5-8 WPM. I like that I can adjust the speed of the letter separate from the WPM speed. I did find other tools better for learning the basics but did use this app from time to time. Now that I can copy all letters and numbers I find my self using the "word" function of this app all the time. Well worth the 99 cents for that feature alown. Thanks for the great work on this app.

Some bad moments

The main problem is that the qso feature does not work which very bad since that would be good practice. Also you cannot sleep the iPod when the ap runs or it will quit. Leaving the screen active is inconvenient.
Read the good reviews so I thought it was going to be worth buying but I was very disappointed to find that there was no audio on my iPhone. It does work on my iPad but thats not what I wanted.
I like the app but it stops working when my screen darkens to save power. Also the app will only play the audio (code) for a few minutes. I want to listen to the code while working, exercising and so on, but no, I find that every few minutes I have to stop what Im doing to baby sit the app.
Although I can appreciate the fact it will randomly send code to test your listening. There is no function to allow me to practice sending. So this is only really half an app. For the price I would expect full functionality. When they add the ability to let me practice sending I will change my review to be more than 1 star. So far not worth the money
Just purchased this app based on the reviews, downloaded to my iPad. Went thru the setting and app instructions. Started to familiarize myself with the controls and "low and behold" you can get the KOCH setting to go back to 1 of 43 with the " - " button! Might want to fix this for the beginners who purchase this app as it is UNUSABLE for beginners!
